Reasons Why You Should Eat an Avocado Everyday

Is an avocado a fruit or a vegetable? It is a fruit, and is a very unique fruit. For a start, like most fruits, it is not sweet.  It is a savoury food, rather delicious and packed to the brim with goodness.

The thing about avocados is that they are filled with fats, whereas most fruits are filled with carbohydrates.  They have a high nutrient content as well as having a delicious flavour and taste.

Avos have become a trend food.  They’re also a superfood, so it is no wonder they are so popular.

Here are a few ways you can eat avocados

  • As a plain avocado.
  • With a little bit of salt or pepper
  • With vinegar
  • Mashed with garlic, as guacamole.
  • On toast.
  • In a salad.
  • As a salsa.
  • As an avocado ritz.

There is even an avocado lime ice cream!

There are many varieties of avocado.  The shape is usually pear shaped, and they can be bright green, dark green and even black.  They have a rough skin which does not get eaten and a pip that gets discarded.  The avo has a creamy rich texture and blends well with many other ingredients.

Why are avocados good for you?

  • High in nutrients
  • Can lower cholesterol
  • Loaded with heart healthy monounsaturated fatty acids
  • High in fibre
  • Low in saturated fat
  • Packed with vitamins

People who eat avocados tend to be healthy.  The avocado is also good for eye health and may prevent cancer. They are known to relieve symptoms of arthritis and if eaten correctly, can also help you to lose weight.

Avocado toast is the new buzzword and it is really delicious.  Avo toast is on any menu now in a good brunch establishment and is quite a trendy food order.  Avocado is green and green is associated with health; everyone wants to be healthy these days.

Where to get avocados?

Your local grocery store, health store or supermarket should sell them as long as they are in season.  Out of season, avocados can be expensive.  Always feel your avocado before you buy it.  If they feel too soft and it is easy to push through the skin, rather don’t buy it.  Or buy it and use it for guac.  It is best to buy an avo that is a little bit hard and wait for it to ripen.

Avocados are used a lot in Mexican food recipes.  Guacamole is served with nachos, tacos and tostadas and enchiladas.  Here is a nice guac recipe,

  • Three avocados, peeled, pitted and mashed
  • Two diced roma plums.
  • One teaspoon minced garlic.
  • One teaspoon salt.
  • Half a cup diced onion.
  • Three tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro.
  • One juiced lime.
  • Pinch pepper.

Peel and pip the avocados, mash them with a fork and add the lime juice and salt.  In a bowl mix in the onion, cilantro, tomatoes and garlic.  Stir in the pepper.  Keep i the fridge for one hour for the best flavour or serve immediately.

You can never have too much guacamole.

There are also people who believe that the avocados is an aphrodisiac.  The word avocado comes from the Nahautl word, meaning testicle. This comes from the shape of an avocado, the somewhat rounded pear shape.

Avocados are good for everyone.  If you can get your children to eat them from a young age, good health will follow. Pregnant women are encouraged to eat avocados, in fact everyone is encouraged to eat avocados.  There are even online stores that will deliver the humble avocado to your home.

So next time you go out for brunch and are about to order French toast, think.  Think what is healthier. And also think what is more delicious?
