Pomegranate : How This Fruit Can Effectively Fight Neuroinflammation Which Caused Dementia

Brain is one of the most vital organ in our body. It controls all functions of the body. It is responsible to the intelligence, emotion, creativity, and memory. Any damage occur to our brain will greatly impact our lives.

Alzheimer disease which is the most common type of dementia account for 60 – 80 percent of dementia cases. Some of the symptoms of this disease are difficulty in remembering recent conversations, names or events, poor judgement, impaired communication, disorientation, and difficulty swallowing, speaking, and walking.

Vascular dementia is another common type of dementia which account for 10 percent of cases. The initial symptoms of vascular dementia including impaired judgement or the ability to make decisions, organize, or plan. This condition is caused by blockage in the blood vessel or bleeding in the brain. How thinking and physical functioning are affected are determine by the number, size, and location of the brain injury.

While for people suffer from dementia with Lewy bodies, symptoms like memory loss, thinking problem, sleep disturbance, slowness, well-formed hallucination, and other parkinsonian movement may occur.

Pomegranate to Prevent Dementia

The fruit that has the ability to reduce the risk of dementia is pomegranate. This fruits contains many vitamins, minerals, fiber and other beneficial compounds. It also has antioxidant properties that can inhibit the development inflammation which cause dementia and related disease.

Pomegranate is known to contain punicalagins which is a potent anti-inflammatory property. Lab test result shown that this substance has the ability to reduce inflammation in the digestive tract, brain cancer, and colon cancer.

According to a study conducted at England’s University of Huddersfield and Germany’s University of Freiburg which was published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, punicalagins can inhibit the damaging neuroinflammation.

Neuroinflammation is the type of inflammation caused by microglia, the central nervous immune cells that are linked to Alzheimer’s disease. The experiments found that punicalagin impacted the production of inflammatory compound significantly.

According to the researchers, punicalagin interfere protein involved in inflammation in multiple ways. They said punicalagins inhibits neuroinflammation due ot its nutritional preventive for neurodegenerative disorders.
