How To Whiten Your Teeth Using Natural Remedies And Why You Should Do It

In the same way that we are all after the perfect body, perfect wrinkle-free face and thick shiny hair, we are also after the perfect white teeth.  You only have to look at all the Hollywood stars to see how much time, and money, goes into their bright white smiles.  In America, it is estimated that more than one billion dollars is spent every year on over the counter teeth whitening products.

Can you imagine how much money then is spent in the Dentist’s office, or with an Oral Hygienist, in this quest for shiny white teeth?   It is an absolute fortune.

There are people who do not have the budget to spend on teeth whitening paraphernalia, and also people who prefer natural methods.  Before we look at methods, let’s look at why teeth can get discoloured.

Why do teeth get yellow?

  • It can be genetic
  • Food stains
  • Drink stains
  • Illness
  • Antibiotics
  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Poor diet

What happens?

Teeth all have an enamel covering, which is the strong white protective layer on the outside. There are some foods and drinks, coffee or coke for example, which will stain the enamel over time.  These food and drink break down the enamel and weaken it, showing the yellow dentin underneath.

Nobody wants yellow teeth.

Here are some of the Natural Remedies you can use

  1. Baking soda and lemon juice
  2. Strawberries, salt and baking soda
  3. Coconut oil
  4. Oil
  5. Crunchy fruit and vegetables
  6. Food grade hydrogen peroxide
  7. Using a straw
  8. Charcoal

The idea of charcoal to whiten your teeth may seem a bit odd, but it works.  It is not the kind of charcoal that you use at a barbecue, but a reheated, oxidised version.  It is a natural tooth whitener.  It works by stripping away the stains and plaque.  Charcoal has a natural adhesive and so it binds with the things that stain your teeth.  It will literally remove the tea, coffee, wine or plaque stains when you spit out.  It is a messy process, as you can imagine, so be careful.

Remember, some people are also just born with naturally darker or yellow teeth.  In this case, the natural remedies will not change the tooth colour.  They will remove stains, but your teeth will remain in their natural state.  This is when a bleaching agent like hydrogen peroxide comes in.  Read the rules and follow them properly.

Flossing has become very controversial and recent articles have been written about how flossing actually does not help.  It is sometimes hard to know what you should do and what you shouldn’t do.  Flossing cannot do any harm and it certainly helps to get rid of extra plague and it helps when you don’t have a toothbrush handy.

Eating an apple as a snack also makes your teeth feel good and also helps when you don’t have your toothbrush.  Same goes for carrots or any crunchy type of fruit.

Coconut oil is that miracle oil that people are using for everything; skin, hair, diet and teeth. You can brush your teeth with coconut oil, or put coconut oil on your finger and massage it into your teeth and gums. It is best to use good quality and organic coconut oil.

There is no harm in trying them, just make sure to get the balance in the recipes right.

Keep your dental hygiene regular.  Brush in the morning and brush in the evening. If you are using any of the above natural remedies, do them at the same time every day.  It is much easier to be consistent if you have a timetable.
