It is hard to meet someone who has never skipped a meal for all kinds of reasons. Some simply don’t have food available or don’t have the time to eat when they’re hungry. Others skip regularly, hoping that if they eat fewer meals, they’ll take in less total calories and lose weight more successfully. However, this is a mere fallacy which does more harm than good. Some of the consequences that you will be expecting when you miss a meal include;
1.Massive drain of your Energy
Sugar is the main source of energy for our bodies. If it is not circulating in the right amounts, every organ within the body can be affected negatively. Skipping just one meal will result in a drop in your body’s blood sugar levels. Generally, you will find yourself feeling tired and wasted. In addition, without a steady supply of nutrients, your intellectual and emotional functioning can also change, resulting in irritability, mood swings and brain fog. Going for extended periods of time without replenishing your body’s fuel supply will force it to shift to breaking down energy stores within the muscle, further sapping your strength. This leads to low productivity and is totally avoidable by taking your meals at the right time to rekindle your energy.
While skipping a meal here and there can be beneficial, harnessing those benefits requires careful planning. Otherwise, you risk nutrient deficiencies linked to fatigue, poor mental function, and other health concerns. When it comes to weight loss, many dieters make the mistake of skipping meals because they think it will lower total calorie intake and promote weight loss. If this describes you, think again. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and set your body up to succeed, focusing on consuming more nutritious, well-rounded meals is necessary for overall health.
3.Leads to Unhealthy Dietary Practices
Our body’s cells are hard-wired for survival. Going too long without eating will switch our body into “survival mode,” sending us on a quest for food. According to the National Institute of Health, skipping a meal has shown to make you feel hungrier when the next meal rolls around. This could cause you to eat more calories than you would have otherwise had. Repeated cycles of restricting and skipping meals can lead to a plethora of detrimental health concerns, however it primarily reinforces unhealthy eating, and can lead to disordered eating practices.
4.Low concentration levels
When you skip lunch, your body slows down your metabolism. The purpose of this is to decrease calorie burn in an effort to conserve these calories for later use. This process hinders weight loss. Successful weight loss comes from supplying your body with the right nutrients by eating healthy meals regularly. When your body does not have access to glucose, which comes from the foods you eat, it turns to glycogen, the stored form of glucose in the liver. While glycogen serves as a backup source of energy, it only lasts for so long. Once glycogen stores are depleted, your brain does not have access to glucose. As a result, your ability to concentrate decreases, and you may have difficulty focusing.
5.Your risk for some diseases may increase.
If you routinely skip breakfast, you may be headed for trouble, says Leah Cahill, PhD, of the Harvard School of Public Health. One of Cahill’s studies found that women who skipped breakfast regularly had a 20% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Another of her studies—this one in men—linked going without a morning meal to heart disease. “Our bodies need to be fed food regularly in order to maintain healthy levels of blood lipids such as cholesterol, hormones such as insulin, and normal blood pressure,” Cahill says. “As we sleep all night we are fasting, and so if we regularly do not take breakfast in the morning, it puts a strain on our bodies that over time can lead to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and blood pressure problems.”
6.Poor performance especially in class
A direct observations of students’ behaviour in the classroom were utilized in studies. Although there are inconsistent findings, the evidence indicated a mainly positive effect of breakfast on general conduct in the classroom in children. Seven of the eleven studies demonstrated a positive effect of breakfast on on-task behaviour. This was apparent in children who were either well-nourished. Tomography studies indicate that cerebral metabolic rate of glucose utilization is approximately twice as high in children aged 4–10 years compared with adults. Therefore, skipping meals is dangerous and should be denounced with the strongest terms possible.
It is therefore paramount that you eat balanced meals all day long and time them well to avoid these consequences. If by some unavoidable circumstances you miss the other meals, please don’t miss breakfast. Breakfast is widely acknowledged to be the most important meal of the day.
